Thai Massage

If you have thought about getting a massage lately, you may have noticed that there are more choices than ever as to the types offered. It can be almost overwhelming. Some therapies are relatively new while others have been around since antiquity and are just now become popular again. One of these later types of massages is Thai massage which is also called Thai yoga massage.
The roots of Thai massage is in the Buddhist temples of the country. In the beginning, treatments were given by Buddhist nuns and monks and they were considered to be a spiritual practice. As Buddhism itself, the massage came to Thailand from India and has as its focus the opening of the prana, or energy, of the body.
As with the meridians used in the acupuncture of Chinese medicine, prana is thought to flow in line of energy. As a practitioner performs the Thai yoga massage, he or she opens up any energy blockages that are in those lines. Once the balance of energy is restored, the client will feel better overall and may also find that medical problems are improved.
This type of treatment is referred to as yoga because it resembles assisted yoga more than it does what is typically thought of as massage. Stretching is a primary part of the therapy and the practitioner actually helps the client to get into the various poses. This stretching is one way that the energy blockages are opened up.
The therapy also includes a type of acupressure. The application of pressure to the points helps remove blockages in the energy. And, as with other kinds of acupressure, they can be used for treating specific issues as well as to balance energy.
Although the therapy was created thousands of years ago, it had fallen into disuse for some time. What was being marketed as Thai massage was often something that was watered down or nothing like its original form. In addition, in some areas, the term Asian massage has been used as somewhat of a euphemism implying incorrect practices thus confusing people. In more recent times, however, the traditional Thai yoga massage has achieved a comeback.
There are spas that offer this therapy but it is sometimes done on top of a massage table. You will still get benefit from this but it limits the way the protocol can be performed. If possible, it is best to get a treatment on a floor mat where you can benefit from all the stretching possible.
The benefits that you receive from these treatments are many. As with most types of massage, you should feel much more relaxed afterward. Although you will feel relaxed, at the same time, you will likely feel energized as well. Aches and pains can be relieved, circulation improved and an overall sense of improved health gained.
If you have yet to try a Thai massage, try to find a practitioner near you. It is worth giving it a try. Many people find that they prefer it to the typical type of massage that is purely for relaxation.
What sets a Thai massage apart from other massages is that it does not work on a particular organ or a couple of muscles, but strives to work on the whole body. The Thai massage is a form of bodywork that has developed from the Chinese practices as well as from the Indian Ayurveda. It works on the pressure points, energy lines and the basic body forces.
